Summer gets the attention, but Mystic is at its most relaxed in winter. Restaurants are easier to book, the village is lit up for the holidays and the big attractions are open year round. Here are our favorite ways to spend a winter weekend.
Mystic Seaport Museum
One of the largest maritime museums in the country, Mystic Seaport Museum recreates a 19th-century seafaring village and is home to the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaleship in the world. During the holiday season the museum has hosted its popular Lantern Light Tours, a theatrical evening walk through the village with costumed actors and lantern-lit scenes. Tickets go quickly, so book early.
Mystic Aquarium
An easy indoor day no matter the weather. Mystic Aquarium is known for its beluga whales and African penguins, plus seals, sea lions and hands-on exhibits for kids. Plan two to three hours, more if you have little ones.
Downtown Mystic and the drawbridge
Bundle up and walk Main Street and West Main Street, browse the independent shops, warm up with coffee or chowder, and watch the Mystic River Bascule Bridge lift for passing boats. Downtown feels especially festive in December.
Olde Mistick Village
This village-style shopping center near the aquarium has hosted holiday events in December, including a lights display and seasonal activities for families. It is a good stop for gifts and a walk among the decorated shops.
Stonington Borough and Groton
Ten minutes east, Stonington Borough is a quiet historic village that is lovely for a winter stroll out to the point. To the west, the Submarine Force Museum in Groton is free and home to USS Nautilus, the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine.
Mystic, Groton & Stonington homes
Walkable village homes and family-size houses near the seaport.
Why stay in a vacation home in winter?
A full kitchen, a living room to spread out in and no shared walls make a winter trip feel like a real getaway. It is also a great way to host family over the holidays, with room for everyone under one roof.
Hours, seasons, passes and event dates change from year to year, so check each venue’s website before you go. Questions about where to stay? Email str@pmisoutheastct.com or call 860-451-9101.
