Built in 1854 by master shipbuilder William Ellery Maxson and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this updated four-bedroom home sleeps eight and sits an easy walk from downtown Mystic.
The Maxson House was built in 1854 for William Ellery Maxson, one of the top ship designers of his day, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today it pairs that history with bright, comfortable rooms and modern conveniences, a short walk from downtown Mystic’s dining, shops and attractions.
The whole house is professionally cleaned and carefully set up before every stay, so you can relax right away. It’s also a short stroll to Mystic Shipyard West, where you can rent kayaks and paddleboards or dock your boat.
William Ellery Maxson was born in Westerly, Rhode Island, in 1818 and apprenticed at 16 in the Greenman shipyard near Old Mystic. In 1853 he co-founded Maxson, Fish & Co. at Willow Point, and the next year he built this house on 13 acres he bought from Captain Peter Forsyth.
Over the next 17 years his yard launched more than 35 vessels, from clipper ships and schooners to steam tugs and gunboats. Its modified Greek Revival design, with two full stories, gables and classical trim, was a favorite of Mystic’s sea captains and merchants before the Civil War. Original touches like cast iron steam radiators remain, and a hand-painted plaque by the front door honors Maxson’s legacy.
