Autumn might be the best-kept secret on the Connecticut shoreline. The summer crowds are gone, the water still looks like summer and the river valley turns gold and red. Here is how to make the most of it.
See the foliage by steam train
The Essex Steam Train & Riverboat runs scenic trips through the Connecticut River valley, past farms and fall color, with the option to continue on by riverboat. It is one of the most popular fall outings in the state, so reserve ahead for October weekends.
Go apple picking
- Scott’s Yankee Farmer in East Lyme offers pick-your-own fruit in season, including apples.
- Holmberg Orchards in Gales Ferry, near Groton and Mystic, is a long-time local favorite for apples and fall treats.
Walk the coast
Cool fall days are perfect for Bluff Point State Park in Groton, with coastal trails out to the point, or a quiet stroll on the Niantic Bay Boardwalk. Beaches that were packed in July are peaceful in October.
Art and history
In Old Lyme, the Florence Griswold Museum tells the story of the Lyme Art Colony, and its riverside gardens are lovely in the fall light. In Mystic, Mystic Seaport Museum is easier to explore without summer crowds.
River & lake retreats
Quiet homes in Old Lyme and Montville, close to the river valley.
Why fall is a great time to book
Many homes have more open dates in September and October, and the weather is often mild enough for one last beach walk. It is also an ideal time for a longer stay. See our monthly stays for homes open to a month or more.
Hours, seasons, passes and event dates change from year to year, so check each venue’s website before you go. Questions about where to stay? Email str@pmisoutheastct.com or call 860-451-9101.
